Now on-line in JACS: Derivatization of Phosphine Ligands with Bulky Deltahedral Zintl Clusters

Zwitterionic Molecules Comprising Zintl Clusters

For the first time the introduction of phosphine moieties at tetrel Zintl clusters was achieved and a series of novel mixed-functionalized cluster compounds bearing phosphine substituents is presented. Besides providing a novel class of bulky phosphine ligands, the anionic compound [Ge9{Si(TMS)3}2PtBu2]- is a suitable ligand for the synthesis of zwitterionic molecules upon attachment to a metal cation via the phosphorus atom (see figure). Both attributes of this novel ligand class (steric impact and capability to form zwitterionic compounds) have previously been revealed to be favorable regarding catalytic applications.
