Research Topic: Diols play a big role in chemistry and are found in many common products we use in our daily lives. Ethylene glycol, for one, is used as antifreeze, coolant, and hydraulic brake fluid. The polymer industry represents one of the largest markets for diols, driven by their essential role in the production of polyesters, polyurethanes, and other performance materials.
The main goal of this project is to develop low-cost, efficient catalysts to hydrogenate diesters to diols. Central to this endeavour is the insight into the structure-performance correlation and main deactivation mechanism of the current catalytic system. Additionally, this project also explores how various synthesis and process parameters influence product selectivity.
