Acrylonitrile (ACN) is an important base chemical for the production of high-performance polymers such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which serve as important materials for carbon fibers. Current ACN and PAN production is based on petroleum and energy-intensive processes, which limits their sustainability. Recently, various studies have shown the potential to produce ACN and PAN from biogenic waste streams such as glycerol, a by-product of biofuel production. However, these processes are still energy-intensive and polluting.
The aim of the EnzACN project is to develop and optimize a novel cellfree biocatalytic enzyme cascade for the conversion of glycerol into ACN. EnzACN wants to establish an environmentally friendly, non-energy-intensive alternative to conventional processes and pave the way for the sustainable production of carbon fibers and their derivatives, the basic materials for the electrification (range extension) of our mobility, and make a significant contribution to the energy transition in Germany.
