"Application of Raman Microscopy For a Rapid Antibiotic Susceptibility Test and the Investigation of Dormant Mycobacteria"

Abstract

Raman spectroscopy is a promising tool for the analysis of bacteria. It provides high molecular information at
microscopic resolution. In this work a protocol to measure the metabolic activity of bacteria by means of
deuterium uptake using D2O-containing medium was developed. Thus rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing in
particular of heteroresistant bacteria was possible. Likewise, the so-called dormant state of Mycobacterium
smegmatis was determined by means of cluster analysis of Raman spectra.
