Research topic:
Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of biomass feedstocks is a promising approach for the synthesis of energy carriers with zero carbon footprint. Here, hydrogenation is a mandatory step in the conversion of biogenic feedstocks into fuels and many valuable chemicals. Performing this step under mild conditions in the presence of an external bias, i.e., electrochemical hydrogenation, is more important than ever due to the increasing availability of renewable electrical energy and the significant potential energy and cost savings from replacing thermal and H2 inputs with cathodic potential.
My research focuses primarily on the electrocatalytic conversion of organic molecules (aldehydes, ketones, and phenolic organics) in aqueous and biphasic systems using platinum group metals.
