Upgrading bio-oils to fuels via electrocatalytic hydrogenation
Hydrogenation of bio-oils is of great importance for their upgrading to fuels. In this context, electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) is a promising area for bio-oil conversion due to the mild reaction conditions required in the absence of external H2. However, the fundamental knowledge on the conversion of oxygenated hydrocarbons via ECH is very limited so far. For instance, the reactivity of target functionalities (e.g., aromatic rings and carbonyl groups) in relation with reaction conditions cannot be predicted yet. Thus, our research interest is to understand the reaction pathways enabled under electrical potential, which provides the reduction equivalents under ECH conditions.
