Synthetic Methods in Inorganic Chemistry
A distinctive combination of synthesis methods allow for the investigation of inorganic materials and soluble main group element compounds. For solids the major activities include the development of energy conversion and storage materials such as new lithium and sodium ion conductors or semiconductors. For molecular atom clusters species such as anionic nine-atom clusters are exciting starting point for the development of nano-scaled materials or catalytically active main-group element molecules. A broad range of synthetic methods, structural characterization techniques (X-ray and neutron diffraction), spectroscopic methods, and physical property measurements such as impedance and magnetic measurements are applied. State-of-art quantum chemical methods are used to deepen the understanding of non-classical bonds in atom clusters and the electronic band structure of solids (see research overview).

Abstract: Unlike homoatomic nine-atom clusters of heavier tetrel elements, which retain their identity upon dissolution, intermetalloid clusters are not formed directly from ternary alkali-metal alloys in a…
Chemical Science
Abstract: Intermetalloid clusters are considered as highly charged soluble models for intermetallic phases. While their bonding situation is not fully understood, their solubility makes them promising…

Abstract: From a reaction of K4Ge9, GaCp*, and [18]crown-6 in ethylenediamine, the new compound [K([18]crown-6)]4[Ga2Ge18]·4en has been obtained, containing the novel [Ge9Ga–GaGe9]4− cluster anion. The compound…
Solid State Ionics
Abstract: Solid electrolytes are a key feature of all-solid-state batteries, which represent advanced energy storage systems. The investigation of electrochemical properties of promising materials is essential…

Abstract: Catalytic reactions with metalated Zintl clusters as catalysts represent a growing research field, whereby the concept of heterogeneous single-site catalysis is transferred towards homogeneous…
Inorganic Chemistry
Abstract: Lithium-ion conductors are one of the key features of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. To modify their properties and enable their implementation in high-performance devices, an understanding of…
Chemistry - A European Journal
Abstract: Homogeneous catalytic reactions performed without or with highly abundant transition metals is an increasing field of research due to cost-effectiveness and sustainability. Therefore, using main group…
Chemistry - A European Journal
Abstract: Zintl phases are excellent precursors for nine atom [E9]4− clusters, which are readily accessible by dissolution of A4E9 phases (A = Na–Rb; E = Ge–Pb) in ethylenediamine (en). In contrast, the binary…
