It is with deep sadness that the Department of Chemistry says goodbye to Dr. Karl Öfele, former Senior Academic Director, outstanding researcher and highly valued member of our former Faculty of Chemistry. During his time in the working groups of Nobel Prize winner Prof. Ernst Otto Fischer, our President Emeritus Prof. Wolfgang Herrmann and even after his retirement in 1997, Karl Öfele dedicated his entire creative career to chemistry at the Technical University of Munich - a period of 60 years in total years (1957 – 2017). Particularly noteworthy are his pioneering work on N-heterocyclic carbenes, which still shape organometallic chemistry at TUM today, but also his interdisciplinary and responsible work for the faculty, especially in planning the chemistry building and organizing the move from Munich in 1976. Enclosed you will find the moving obituary “Um mir ist Heimat”, which Prof. Herrmann wrote for Karl Öfele and which we can share with you. Our deep condolences go to his family. We will always honor Karl Öfele's memory.
