Two areas of work are the focus of research interest: In the artificial modification of native proteins, non-natural structural elements are covalently and regioselectively attached to a mature protein in order to control its functional properties. On the other hand, molecular recognition in abiotic host-guest systems is examined in its structural and energetic basis. The knowledge gained finds application in the specific detection of anions, in their programmed assembly and in catalytic reactions.
