Ship Emission Inspection with Calibration-free Optical Remote Sensing

The aim of this research project is the development of a flexible measurement instrument for the operational monitoring of sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission factors (SO2 and NOx per engine power and per emitted CO2, respectively) in maritime shipping. The instrument is meant to monitor compliance with the specifications of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) within so-called "Emission Control Areas" (ECAs) as well as with NOx emission factors in inland shipping.

By monitoring compliance, the competitiveness of marked partipicants in shipping can be ensured. The system will cover a wide range of applications thanks to minimal logistical requirements and can be used within port areas as well as flexibly on riverbanks, e.g. for monitoring the compliance with emission guidelines of incoming and outgoing vessels. The data obtained holds great potential and will serve as a basis for optimizing port operations and maritime transport hubs in terms of energy efficiency and profitability, environmental protection and sustainability.
